Best Areas to Stay in Bali for Beginner Surfers

Yes, we all started somewhere, and it is better to give in and accept that you are still in the process of learning than to let your ego get in the way of your surf progression.

So skip the Uluwatu and Padang Padang waves for now (although Baby Padang Padang is a great spot for beginners on some days) and start your journey to becoming a better surfer in either Canggu or Kuta.

Canggu

Canggu is a laidback town not far from Kuta and Seminyak. In recent years it has seen explosive development with more and more ex-pats and Digital Nomads choosing to stay here for a longer period of time.

And who blames them? Canggu has a wide variety of cafes, restaurants, (beach) clubs, a chill surf vibe, and some of the best waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

The most well-known surf break for beginners in Canggu is called Old Mans. A fat wave rolling over the reef, creating the ultimate playground for beginners. Be careful though, most of the time it is super busy with all the surf lessons taking place at once!

Old Mans

Old Mans (named after the surf break right in front of it) is conveniently located at the beach in Canggu overlooking the surf breaks Batu Bolong & Old Mans. Stop by for an after-surf sesh meal or happy hour deals at sunset.

Kuta

Chill Spots in the Kuta Area

Pavilion Surf Club

Best Areas to Stay in Bali for Advanced Surfers

Bukit Peninsula

The Bukit Peninsula is the perfect area in Bali for surf fanatics. All the best waves Bali has to offer are within a short distance from each other. These waves and the stunning beaches combined make the Bukit the ultimate place for surfers in Bali.

Your Best bet is to stay on the left side of the Bukit. Here, you will have access to the surf breaks like Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin, Balangan, Impossibles. If you ask us, that is not a bad area to stay in!

Accommodation on the Bukit Peninsula for Surfers

There is a restaurant, an outdoor swimming pool, and a garden at Uluwatu’s The Room Padang-Padang. A concierge desk, free Wi-Fi, and a tour desk are just a few of the amenities available at this hotel. Transfers to and from the airport are provided, as is a vehicle rental service.

Every morning, guests may choose from a variety of breakfast choices, including continental and à la carte.

The distance from Uluwatu Temple is 3.8 km, while the property’s distance from El Kabron Bali is 600 m. Ngurah Rai International Airport is 9 kilometers. So your drive from the airport will not be that long if Bali’s traffic is cooperating that day.

The Surf Bingin Beach has spectacular views of the Bingin surf break. A feast for the eyes! On another note, Kelly’s Warung is just a few steps away. Sunsets with cocktails guaranteed. 

Chill Spots on the Bukit Peninsula for Surfers

Kelly’s Warung

Kelly’s Warung is a surfer-styled warung located on the cliffs of Bingin beach. Overlooking one of the best (photogenic) surf breaks in Bali, Kelly’s offers great food, regular (beach) parties, stunning sunsets, and good laughs with its regular visitors. 

Keep in mind that Kelly’s is a steep walk down and up from the cliffs, so either calm down on the drinking games or stay the night at one of the many accommodations Bingin has to offer.

Drifter surf Cafe

Drifter Surf Cafe has it all. They serve great healthy food for your pre- & post-surf sesh meal. Most ingredients are locally sourced, and their delicious coffee is from the Mandailing Estate in Sumatra!

In addition to their cafe, they also have a shop offering just about everything a surfer ever wanted. Ranging from beautiful surfboards, surf apparel, accessories, and even books. They have it all, and it’s definitely worth the stop!

Thruster Club

Thruster Club, located at the back of White Monkey Surf Shop, is one of those places that you must go to if you are into surfing. It is a great place to catch up with friends over a nice cup of coffee or create new friendships with the people you meet here. Everyone coming here shares that same passion for surfing with you, so a lot to talk about!

Come here for your early morning Bullet Coffees, juices, or some healthy shots of Kombucha. In the evenings, Thruster Club becomes the ultimate place for some drinks and snacks while watching some of the best surf movies (movies are on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

At the back of Thruster Club, there is a Nalu Bowls joint serving healthy bowls to fill you up after a demanding surf sesh at either Padang Padang, Impossibles, or one of the many surf spots the Bukit Peninsula has to offer.

Keramas

Keramas is a less developed area on Bali’s East Coast. Nevertheless, this is the place to be for surfers during the wet season here in Bali. Producing awesome waves, this is your surf spot from November till March.

The selection of accommodation and places to chill is not as broad as in other parts of Bali (like Canggu), but this does mean that you will experience the real feeling and the calmness of the Island of the Gods.

Keramas Surf Camp

Keramas Surf Camp is only 2 minutes away from Keramas surf spot. Overlooking the rice fields, it offers air-conditioned bungalows and seating areas. Keramas Surf Camp is especially liked by solo travelers but accommodates all.

Komune Beach Resort

Just in front of the famous Keramas surf break lies Komune Beach Resort. Overlooking this monster of a wave (during the rainy season), you will not find a better front seat row to the best entertainment during the off-season (November – March). 

The Resort has a range of rooms, suites, and villas in different price ranges. Expect to pay a more premium price compared to local homestays & guesthouses. Komune also has a Health Hub that includes a Spa, Training Pool, Yoga, and A Fitness Center & Functional Training!

At the beach in Keramas, Bali, you will find Locas Waroeng, an Indonesian-style cafe. Next to Hotel Komune, they are a short walk from the Keramas surf break. Various options are available on the menu, ranging from pizza and burgers to Indonesian and Balinese dishes, all of which are delicious and well-prepared. 

Friendly service brings out generous servings, and the meals are all reasonably priced as well. It is a locally-owned restaurant with a large terrace and a great view of the waves. Excellent spot for surf-watching and unwinding after a demanding surf sesh at Keramas surf break.

Komune Beach Club

Komune Beach Club is located right in front of Keramas Beach surf break. The ideal hang-out for an all-day surf patrol, including some drinks and good food. They offer a mix of comfy food and healthy, locally produced dishes. From farm to table as they say. 

Although it’s a bit on the pricy side, the view overlooking the world-class waves (during the rainy season) is something else! Definitely worth a go if you don’t mind paying a little bit more.
